Sagres
The mythical promontory of Sagres is where the journey ends,
unless we listen to our dreams. One who listened was Henry the Navigator, who
decided to seek new routes over the distant horizon and chose this as the site
for his school for mariners, where the saga of the Portuguese Discoveries
began. Although the buildings were raised to the ground in 1587 by Sir Francis
Drake on his way to a corsair attack on Lagos the spirit of the place remained
intact, guarded by the fortress formed by the bastions of Saint Antony and
Saint Barbara, dating fro the XIV century. The wind Rose set out in stone with
a diameter of 43 metres guided the course of the Portuguese caravels. Not even
the great earthquake of 1755 could disturb this brooding mass of rock, at the
most adding a few feet to the caverns and grottoes driven into the cliff side
by the wild sea. Although the buildings have changed radically with time,
there still remains the batteries which guarded the bays of Tonel and Mareta,
like sentinels and living symbols of a land of mariners.
